Twenty

It felt like we fell for minutes, but I realized that couldn’t be the case. We fell for what had to be two, maybe three seconds. It was so difficult to tell who would be on the bottom and who would land on the top of the fall, but while Mr. Fluffy worried about gouging me with his talons and doing damage, I took those precious few seconds to reorient myself and make sure I used him as a landing pad.

When we struck the ground, he landed first, with me on top of his chest. I heard bones crack deep in his cavernous chest as the air was knocked out of both of us. The back of his head slammed against the sand while my face buried in the soft fur of his chest.

In another world, I was being cradled by a werewolf and rocked to sleep. In this world, I rolled off him, struggling to breathe. My body hurt all over. With the surge of adrenaline rushing through my body, it was impossible to tell if I had broken anything.

I heard people yelling from the stands. I saw Frankie shouting to me, pointing over my shoulder.

“The fight’s not over yet!” Frankie’s voice cut through the din. “Behind you!”

I rolled over on my hands and knees to take a look to my left. Sand granules fell off my hair and clothes, making their way into my eyes, nose, and mouth as I witnessed the impossible.

The werewolf was gasping for breath. He looked a lot worse off than I was, but he was struggling to rise to his feet.

“Oh, be still, my beating heart, it looks like both contestants are still in the fight,” I heard Gladys announce. “Remember, the contest is over when only one person can stand. The towers are just an extra element.”

“Now!” Fallon roared from the benches. “While he’s still recovering. You can’t give him time to heal!”

I looked deep to see how much I had left in the tank. That primal animal inside of me told me I was just getting started.

I dug heels into the ground and raced forward as the wobbling werewolf rose to unsteady feet. He wasn’t looking at me now, probably trying to get his bearings from the concussion he suffered.

Slamming into the back of the werewolf, I wrapped both arms around his torso and lifted him from the ground. I drew on that primeval rage right now. Continuing my forward momentum, I drove him face first into the steel platform. His skull made contact with the hard surface.

When I let go of him, he dropped to his knees, blood oozing from his nose and mouth. I grabbed both his pointed ears, driving his head down as my right knee came up and caught him under the chin with a crack so loud, I was sure it could be heard from the stands.

The werewolf’s head snapped back as his eyes rolled to the rear of his head. He fell backward onto the sand and didn’t move.
